Homemade Oat Milk

Making Oat Milk at home is easy and you can turn it into some real tasty flavours!

Here's what you'll need:

Ingredients: makes 1 litre/34oz

2 cups rolled oats (I use organic but whatever you can afford)

6 cups water

Chocolate (for 1 litre/34oz)

2 tablespoons cocao powder

3 tablespoons maple syrup

Strawberry (for 1 litre/34oz)

1 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen with leaves removed

2 tablespoons maple syrup

Vanilla (for 1 litre/34oz)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons maple syrup

So into a blender add in your oats, now I love oat milk because its high in protein and fibre lower in sugar than cow milk, but its also lactose, soy and nut free and also vegan. But if you’re a breast feeding mother, then its also the best and easiest way to increase your breast milk supply.

So to the oats all I adding is water, I place the lid on and blend for 6-8 minutes. The oats will turn really creamy and begin to break down all their goodness into the water.

So to get that really smooth, creamy milk texture I put the oat milk through 2 stages - firstly through a fine sieve which picks up the most of the sediment, which you can use to make cookies or porridge with. And then secondly through muslin cloth to pick up the very fine pieces the sieve might have missed.

The result will be a very fine creamy milk. Now you can place this into the fridge and it well keep for 3-4 days.

But what I love to do for my kids, is flavour the milk up with natural ingredients and it couldn’t be easier!

Lets do chocolate first, add in cacoa powder which is lower in sugar than cocoa. Then a touch of maple syrup. Blend until smooth and you have a chocolate flavoured drink without all the processed sugars.

Next, my favourite - add fresh strawberries along with some maple syrup and again blend until smooth and it turns a light pink.

The other you can do is straight up vanilla which is the oat milk, some vanilla extract and maple syrup.

Its much more economical making it at home, it tastes better and with the added flavours is going to please everyones tastes.
